It's my understanding that the silly rule actually comes from the DVD association who puts silly restrictions for anyone who wishes to officially be a DVD player. It stems from the same regime who doesn't let us skip through the 'FBI Warnings' and 'the views expressed..' dialogs.

If I remember correctly, this was the behavior in earlier OS X releases, possibly in Jaguar ( or maybe OS 9?).
I distinctly remember being able to take screen grabs and the DVD window being blacked out…

In fact, at some point (OS9? Still?) weren't movies displayed directly by the video card? DVD player essentially displayed a dark green window and the video card would decode and display the video itself. Screen shots would function but display the dark green window instead of a movie still.

In fact, if you made that screen capture of DVD Player your desktop wall paper, playing a movie in DVD Player would play the movie on your desktop.

In the early days, taking automated screenshots was actually a viable DVD ripping technique. It's been rendered obsolete by DeCSS, but it used to be practised.
Nowadays, yes, it's just silly. But probably outside Apples control.

I just wonder why is it then that any Windows DVD player software will happily allow you to take a screenshot – they even provide you with built-in commands for that. Including the major and surely offically licensed players, PowerDVD and WinDVD.

DVD association certification is a hardware thing, not a software thing.
While there are 'official DVD drives' (certified, that follow the spec) and 'unofficial drives' (that don't follow the spec and don't have certification), there is no such distinction in software. So PowerDVD, WinDVD, DVD Player, VLC, et cetera, are not 'official' players in any sense and do not need to submit to the DVD association.
The problem for Apple is, that they sell Apple-branded DVD drives, so they have to be careful about getting on the wrong side of the DVD association. That is why they voluntarily prevent DVD Player from being used to make screenshots (where possible).
The makers of PowerDVD and WinDVD and VLC do not make DVD drives and have no contact with the DVD association, and therefore do not restrict the taking of screenshots.

Another method is to use a screen capture widget such as Screenshot Plus:http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/business/screenshotplus.html
I've been using this for years, and its even more handy if you enable developer mode in Dashboard which lets you use widgets on your desktop:

How to setup microsoft remote desktop app on mac. I'm not sure about 10.6, but in older versions of OS X, you can take a screen shot of DVD Player by using the screencapture command. If you combine it with the sleep command you can delay the command allowing you time to switch back to full screen DVD playback before the capture is made. I always found it odd that screencapture ignored the DVD Player app and the OS screen capture did not.

QuickTime 7 Player allows you to record the screen.. so just have to start screen recording and then switch to the DVD Player in full screen mode to copy a DVD.. or any video online that does not allow copying such as those embedded in Flash App remover for mac.
Do you mean QuickTime Player X? As that is the only one with screen recording and if so, even screen recording won't capture the dvd player app - it's just a solid colour of nothingness.
